Keynote Title: Motivated Students = Skilled Communicators
Abstract: Today’s students, wired for instant feedback and instant results in order to stay motivated, demand instructional practices that blend the need for immediacy with overarching goals that require time to accomplish. In world language instruction, two initiatives are particularly appropriate for meeting the needs of these students. The first initiative is the Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA) project initiated several years ago by ACTFL. The IPA assesses students on how well they can communicate about meaningful content at a given point in time. The emphasis on content or a theme that is cognitively engaging motivates students to learn the language they need in order to express their ideas and understand other perspectives on the topic. The second initiative, the LinguaFolio, with an emphasis on self-assessment addresses the need for instant feedback while working towards increased proficiency in the language. By providing clear benchmarks that allow students to set their goals for learning, they can regularly self-assess their progress towards reaching those goals. Together these two initiatives can motivate students to commit to the time needed to become skilled communicators.
