The council was overseeing the development and writing of Internet-Based Language Placement Exams for incoming freshmen and transfer students in eight additional languages. This project not only allowed for a constructive dialogue among all languages about the content, format and function of a language placement exam, it also streamlined the language placement for all incoming freshmen and for transfer students and allowed them to take one (or several) placement exam(s) either before arriving on campus, during new student week, or later during the year. The project was shown at a CLI presentation in the Spring of 2003 to faculty and staff.
The council began a discussion on the development and writing of Internet-Based Language Placement Exams for incoming freshmen and transfer students in eight additional languages. German, French, and Spanish have already used on-line language placement exams since 1997 with great success. The plan was for the eight additional on-line exams to be based on the French, German, and Spanish examples. The funds needed for this project totaled $ 32’000. The CLI wrote various grant applications and secured the funds from the following sources: WCAS ($ 10’000 and $ 5’000), Steve Fischer ($ 4’000 and $ 4’000) and the CLI ($ 6000 and $ 3000).
