1998/1999
The Council on Language Instruction was asked to provide WCAS with a comprehensive survey about the computer needs of language instructors. Discussions with departmental chairs, language coordinators, and members of the CLI and a complete inspection of offices and computer systems revealed that the computer hardware available to language instructors was critically outdated in some cases and quite insufficient in others. The report concluded that such inadequate computing power not only prevents language instructors from performing their teaching duties in a competent way, but it also does not allow them to learn and experiment with new ways of integrating technology into their teaching. Based on the report, Mort Rahimi and WCAS granted special funds to purchase much needed hardware (about $30'000)

1997/1998
The council hosted the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages Oral Proficiency Interview ( ACTFL OPI) training session. There were 12 training sessions for Spanish, Japanese, German, French, English/LCT, Russian, and Chinese. More than 100 language instructors from all over the world came to Northwestern. As the hosting institution, we were able to send 12 language instructors from our institution to attend the OPI workshop free of charge.
