The council applied for and received an Alumnae Grant of $ 4300 for the purchase of a Digital Video Cassette Camcorder and two additional microphones. The Hewlett Committee provided funds to purchase two DV IMACS and compression station for the editing and final cutting of student digital video. In the Spring of 2001, the MMLC and the CLI offered a series of workshops on the use of digital media for language learning.
The council participated in a Colloquium on Language Centers hosted by the Center for Language Study at Yale University. During the colloquium, the leaders of eight Language Centers (Berkeley, Brigham Young, Brown, Columbia, Penn, Rice, Stanford and Yale) gave presentations and participated in panel discussions on the mandates, infrastructures, opportunities, and challenges of centers established by individual universities. Representatives from 23 American and Canadian universities, public and private, attended the colloquium. The council formulated recommendations to further strengthen the teaching of foreign languages in the college and across other units. In addition, the council received $ 6300 in grant money (Hewlett Fund and Alumnae Grant) to purchase a digital still camera to offer several technology workshops (together with the MMLC) in web development and to purchase software for language instructors.
