The Council on Language Instruction is composed of representatives
from seven language programs and departments. There are full
members and associate members. Full members are full-time
language coordinators from the departments/programs of African
and Asian Languages, Classics, the ESL Program (Department
of Linguistics), French and Italian, German, Slavic Languages
and Literatures, Spanish and Portuguese, as well as the directors
of the Program of African and Asian Languages and the Multi-Media
Learning Center. Associate members are other language instructors
also particularly interested in the pedagogy of language teaching.
They can come from any department. Specifically, the composition
of the council is as follows:
The co-chair
The director of the
Multimedia Learning Center (MMLC)
The director of the Program
of African and Asian Languages (PAAL)
Coordinators of language courses and/or language program directors
from all language units
Other full-time language lecturers with special expertise
Full members are appointed to the Council by the Weinberg
College of Arts and Sciences with input from the council members
and co-chairs.
Associate members are elected to the Council by the full members
of the Council for a one-year term, renewable for one additional
year.
CLI members are considered representatives of their language
units. The members are responsible for facilitating communication
between the Council and colleagues in their language programs/departments.
Specifically, members should voice the concerns of their language
units to the Council, report back to their language units
on CLI meetings/business, encourage colleagues’ participation
in CLI-sponsored events, as well as encourage professional
development and enhancement of language instruction at Northwestern.
If CLI members feel they cannot uphold these responsibilities,
they can step down from the Council to allow someone else
from their language program to participate and fully represent
their department/program.
